The Surprising performance of a BSNL ADSL Modem

by Ravi on Aug.26, 2008, under General

I have been using the same modem for about a year now, and for the past few days since I got my unlimited data transfer internet connection, I am surprised at the work that it is doing. Im downloading all sorts of stuff, and my computer is plugged to a 2 hour backup power supply as well, and Pondicherry not being a very bad place wehre power goes down for over 2 hours at a streatch, the computer and the modem have literally been running for over 2 months at a streatch now since july 1st when my plan changed to unlimited 512 kbps from 2 Mbps limited.

If you are outside India, you might laugh at this cos probably you might be on a 10 Mbps connection while reading this, but in India owning a 512 Kbps connection is like owning a Rolls Royce. I sit before this computer for about 6 hours a day, and therefore the AC runs here for 6 hours a day, and for the remaining 18 hours, the door is locked, and so are all windows, and the heat is almost unbearable when I enter the room in the evening after office. No AC, no ventilation, and all the heat that is released by the cpu and the modem have no means of getting out of the room.

Well, anyways, I am quite happy with the performance of the modem, as I know that the computer has to perform, after all it is a server quality cpu that I have got, and the monitor is always turned off, as I use it only when I am working on the PC. The modem is working in its full effecienty round the clock for the past 2 months, during which time it has not been turned off even once, and BSNL too has been able to supply data all this while (i think i am sure that there has been no downtime or anything), though at the office it is a different story.

Alli

by Ravi on Aug.08, 2008, under General

Alli is supposed to be a flower in Tamil, but recently a new diet pill called alli has come up. Well, as I always say, people eat all sorts of junk food that has no protien in it and just has got fat, just for the taste of it, and end up getting blown up with weight. One good way to reduce that fat? Excercise ofcourse. But who would do that? No one. It is boring and people would rather be doing something else, and it takes a lot of time, and it is hard work. Who would want to do hard work these days when you have a computer to do everything for you?

Well, One good alternative is a diet pill, that will help you to burn away all your extra weight and calories in yoru body and make you fit and slim back again and with that body if you stop using the elevators and escalators and use the flights of stairs to reach your office, you will continue to stay in fit shape.

On Site from India

by Ravi on Aug.06, 2008, under General

Several people who are into software companies join in Indian Multi Nationals who usually have their base in California, and flee to the US to attend to some onsite project implementation or something for quite some time. When these people go as guests to the client’s places, they are given all sorts of previlleges, like a car, a decent place to stay, top calss food, and pretty good spending money. So in the weekends, they look around the city, go travelling around, look around the whole of the US at the company’s expense, and look for some consultancy who would have a good list of San Francisco jobs in their portfolio and pass on the resumes to them, and when their project at their site is complete, they just resign the job, and with the experience in hand, just join a job right there and dont come back to India.

The blog of an exchange student from Korea

by Ravi on Jul.28, 2008, under General

South Korea is a good place. Quite a famous place for all sorts of hardware and electronics stuff, and it is quite popular for several other Industries as well. Thanks to the Americans who supported them during the Korean War. Life in the North is miserable though. It is a communist country, and the rations are very low, and if someone hears anyone complaining about the dictatorship or the rations, the person along with hsi entire family which would include everyone he is related to would go straight to jail, and at jail, life is horrible. One who enters the jail in North Korea very rarely makes it out, and there is almost no food that is provided in the jails. The dictator of North Korea however has a very good collection of sports cars and stuff, but all these things are what American TV channels tells us. North Korea would naturally have a different version.

But to get the real information about Korea, its culture, people and others, I chose to subscribe to a blog of an exchange student, which gives a very clear individual and impartial account on what really goes on in Korea, and why it is really not like what we see on TV.
